Our History
In the years prior to our formal establishment in 1955, STM partnered with the U.S. military to provide a more durable, cost-effective solution for aerial target practice through the use of conductive textiles. Sustainable aerial target practice was a key activity in establishing the air superiority of U.S. aircraft and service members in the earliest days of radar technology.
As the discovery and study of radar technology began, it was common practice for military aircraft to tow fiberglass decoy aircraft for use during aerial target practice. This method was expensive and presented safety hazards for the lead towing aircraft. Conductive materials – specifically, fabric - could be seen by radar and towed at a much safer distance. Using excess factory capacity, STM began metalizing textiles to be used as aerial tow targets.
As a result of that success and commitment to excellence, STM began to regularly serve the Aerospace, Defense, Medical, and Telecommunications industries. By 2011, STM achieved AS9100 certification, affirming our commitment to quality. In 2014, STM expanded its physical footprint, adding 10,000 ft² of space dedicated to supporting Aerospace and Defense customers.
With a strong focus on innovation, engineering, and customer involvement, STM has become a trusted provider of standard and custom conductive fabrics and solutions for aerospace, defense, and commercial applications.
STM currently operates in a dedicated 30,000 ft² facility located just north of Hartford, CT in the heart of Connecticut’s Aerospace Alley. At STM, employees are trained to the AS9100D & ISO9001:2015 quality management system to ensure quality product is manufactured safely and delivered on time to all customers for any application. STM is compliant with ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) and EAR (Export Administration Regulations) requirements. |
